A wind power plant will be set up in Lamu by a Belgian company.

Electrawinds, which has been developing a wind farm in Mpeketoni since 2011, says it will be working with the International Finance Corporation’s InfraVentures in building the plant expected to cost Sh15.1 billion and generate 90 megawatts.

It is not clear whether InfraVentures will be funding the power plant. Work begins next year.
However, a statement sent to newsrooms on Tuesday indicates the two will be setting up a joint committee to manage the plant’s construction.

“A joint development team has been set up to further develop the project,” read the statement.
The Mpeketoni plant received the go-ahead from the National Environment Management Authority earlier this year and expects to obtain a planning permit later this year.

KenGen is the sole generator of windpower in Kenya with a 5.11 mw plant in Ngong Hills.
