KAMPALA
Ugandan scientists have launched a forum for reviewing each other’s work so as to identify quality studies which can be recommended for integration into national development plans and policies.

The initiative is aimed at exposing scientists’ academic work through publications and recommending the good work to potential end-users rather than leaving it lying idle in book shelves as is the case in most research institutions today.

Call to publish
Speaking at the annual conference of the Uganda Society for Health Scientists (USHS), Dr Andrew Kambugo, the chairperson, said it is absurd that it is Ugandans who perform the bulk of work when foreign researchers come to undertake studies here but their contribution is rarely attributed. “For example, how can we empower health workers and improve data management among them if we don’t publish or have research findings that add value to society?” Dr Kambugo said.

The scientists hope to create a platform for scientists from all backgrounds, including at community level to present their findings for adoption by the government.
