Labour, Employment and Youth Development minister Gaudensia Kabaka has urged social security funds to increase competition in providing social security among Tanzanias, especially the self-employed.
“I urge social security funds to compete so as to attract more members, especially from the private sector,” said Kabaka.
Speaking at the launch of the Social Security Week in commemorating 50 years of independence in Dar es Salaam on Tuesday, Kabaka said that only 3 per cent of workers in Tanzania had joined social security funds.
The Social Security Week, with the theme '50 years of independence - social security funds for all', will end November 13.
Commenting on the challenges facing the ministry, Kabaka said that the increasing number of graduates in Tanzania's universities does correspond with employment opportunities, hence precipitating an unemployment problem.
She advised youths to be aggressive in competing for jobs since they are academically well equipped well, promising that the government was working to solve the scourge of unemployment.
