TRC gets three-month ultimatum to construct barricades

By ANNE ROBI

WORKS, Transport and Communication Minister Professor Makame Mbarawa has issued a three-month ultimatum to Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) to build barricades at the railway crossings to prevent car-train accidents.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam yesterday, Prof Mbarawa also directed TRC to recruit people who will be
responsible in overseeing and controlling the crossing of cars and railway at each railway intersection. “Put up the barricades in the railway and car intersections to oversee people’s security---value for people’s lives should come first. The task should be completed in three months from now,” he said.
Prof Mbarawa told the cooperation to pay the new recruits 300,000/- monthly to enable them work efficiently for the good of people’s security and railway assets. The Minister made the directives in response to an accident which occurred after the minibus plying between Kigoma and Nzega in Tabora rammed into the train, killing people.
Two days after the accident, Kigoma District Commissioner Samson Anga said most of the train-car accidents occurred due to drivers’ negligence. The Minister said Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) and TRC will collaborate in designing and constructing the barricades.
