Chemba DC bans witch doctors

By LUDOVICK KAZOKA

IN effort to prevent attacks and discrimination against people with Albinism, Chemba District Commissioner (DC) Simon Odunga has banned witch doctors who conduct ancestral calling.
Speaking during the International Albinism Awareness Day in Chemba recently, Mr Odunga pointed out that witch doctors were behind the killings of people with albinism whose body parts are sought.

He said body parts of people with albinism were being chopped for black magic purposes. “The witch doctors who will be found conducting such activities will face the wrath of law,” warned the DC who represented the Dodoma Regional Commissioner, Dr Binilith Mahenge at the annual event, which was held at regional level in Chemba District.
Mr Odunga said the government will ensure people with albinism access healthcare, including availability of special lotion in all public hospitals, saying the special lotion prevents skin cancer to the people. On his part, the People with Albinism Association Secretary General, Mr Hudson Seme, said there were no clear figures of people with albinism.
“It’s vital for people with albinism to form groups which engage in income generating activities,” he said. He expressed gratitude to the government for great support to the group, saying the government through its Department of Social Development has tremendously supported the group.
The International Albinism Awareness Day is held under the theme ‘Change the negative mindset against People with Albinism; Industrial Revolution should consider healthcare and education of the group.Chemba DC bans witch doctors
